Intergenerational Engagement in the New Era:

Foreign Experience and Chinese Ideas

We welcome domestic and foreign experts, scholars, government workers, young students, practitioners, and companies in the fields of gerontology, social work, family, youth, children, and related disciplines to join together, to reflect on and summarize the traditions and practices of Chinese intergenerational research and practices, learn foreign development experience, and discuss the challenges and opportunities for launching an intergenerational research and education center in Wuxi, China.

We sincerely invite you and your colleagues to give presentations to a three-day gathering, which will be held in Wuxi China, November 3rd-5th, 2018. We welcome reports, overviews of new program models, and full papers from all over the world and encourage you to join us in China, to share your research and knowledge. Listeners are also welcomed.

Background

Population aging is a common issue which most countries are facing today. However, along with the continuous deepening of the aging population trend, coupled with the overall low income level of the elderly and the imperfect social security system, most of the Chinese people are not well prepared both for life and spirit in their old age. The report of the 19th National Congress of Communist Party of China (2017) explicitly pointed out that it is necessary to proactively respond to the trend of population aging, build a policy system and social environment for supporting the elderly, promote values of filial piety and respect for the elderly, and accelerate the development of businesses and industries that support and engage the elderly. In order to respond to the development needs of the aging society in the new era and fully utilize the opportunity of demographic transition, the Wuxi Scientific Research Center for Ageing at Jiangnan University (China), with the support of Penn State University, intends to establish the Intergenerational Inclusion Center (IIC) (代际共融中心). The mission of the IIC is to integrate research, education, and innovative and effective practice in the intergenerational studies field for the benefit of all ages.

Objective

Through presentations, networking, experience exchange, and technical assistance provided by intergenerational practitioners in China and from several other countries, this conference aims to explore synergies between localized ideas of Chinese intergenerational engagement and modes of intergenerational research and practice emerging on the international front. The conference will also serve as a vehicle for planning and laying down the foundations for launching the IIC as an international center for intergenerational research, education and practice.

Conference Structure:

The conference will be divided into three parts.

Day 1 (Nov. 3rd, 2018): Keynote speeches (in the morning) and panel discussions (in the afternoon).
